Somalia IDP Camps

The Somalia Capital Mogadishu suffered from severe destruction since 1991 and still on-going fighting clashes between warring factions have resulted in thousands of civilian casualties and deaths. As a result of this war hostility, there has also been a massive outflow of IDPs fleeing from the fighting. More than 400,000 IDPs are estimated to have left from Mogadishu city and a further 30-40% of the population is estimated to be displaced within the city of Mogadishu and its surroundings. While also new other IDPs flee from the city every time a new conflicts take place In total 70-80% of the population of Mogadishu is thought to have been displaced during the intense fights last year and the year before between the Ethiopian forces and the resistance. The displaced people mostly concentrated in the middle Shabelleh region (39%) and (51%) in Central region. Some small towns have received massive influxes, such as the estimated 40,796 – 60,000 in Afgoye and IDPs temporarily scattered around Mogadishu as they lack other means to flee further.

Middle Shabelle which is 90kms from Mogadishu and Afgoi which is less than 20kms from Mogadishu where violent civil war took place for the past two years as the Ethiopian troops invaded Somalia, have seen an exodus of IDPs settling in designated camps and facing extremely harsh life i.e. food security problem, SGBV, Health Issues, Lack of Education/schooling for the children, The humanitarian situation in the country has affected women and children tremendously and the majority population in Somalia regardless of gender or age group.
