Achievements

WOCCA's recent achievements:
- WOCCA has recently implemented Protection project in Middle and Lower shabelle regions funded by UNHCR through INTERSOS (from October-December 2008) by identifying and establishing temporary structures; and distributed materials for women, youth as well as Extremely Vulnerable Individuals in the targeted IDP camps.
- Between 2008 and 2009, WOCCA’s efforts were also concentrated in Food Security activities through Agricultural/Poverty Reduction Projects integrated with revolving credit to the small scale farmers to enhance and improve their economic household income and reduce vulnerability to food insecurity.
- WOCCA has organized its targeted communities for disaster preparedness risk reduction to mitigate the cycle/seasonal floods that are common in M/shabelle region.
- WOCCA has established Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Committees at Village Level in five villages of WOCCA’s project area.
- WOCCA has implemented “Support to primary school education in Jowhar, Mahaday and Balad districts in Middle Shabelle Region” project by establishing seven temporary schools, rehabilitation one school and also construction of one permanent primary school in Mahaday funded by UNICEF through INTERSOS from August 2008- November 2008.
- It has also implemented Rehabilitation of Rural Infrastructure and Support for Population in Balad and Jowhar Villages (canal rehabilitation through cash for work) Flood emergency Response in 5 villages of Jowhar/Mahaday Districts in M/Shabelle funded by FAO from April-May 2008 in Balcad and July & August 2008 in Jowhar villages.
- WOCCA has implemented Integrated approach for enhancing community response in emergencies by mobilizing and enhancing 15 selected villages in Middle shabelle and 5 IDP camps in Afgoi, Lower shabelle in cholera prevention, service delivery including health and education, prevention of spread of HIV and protection against SGBV with funding from UNICEF.
- WOCCA has integrated with its activities Natural Resource Management, sustainable land use and protection of environment and conservation to reduce land degradation and soil erosion in the project area.
- Furthermore, Education and Sanitation activities were also glued with agricultural activities in order to reduce the illiteracy of girl child and boys as well as adult people.
- Through this thematic, WOCCA has undertaken various awareness raising activities on FGM as well as HIV/Aids epidemic to enable the community better known the problems and consequences of harmful traditional practices of FGM on girl child as well as HIV/Aids problems.
- In protecting children and reducing abuses including SGBV, WOCCA has implemented (in 2008) 2 Child protection Projects by undertaking Investigation, Documentation, Monitoring & Advocacy (IDMA) activities and raised awareness of child/women’s rights in Middle Shabelle communities.
- WOCCA has developed a Gender policy Document in 2007 to promote equity and equality between women and men, throughout the life course of the project area, and ensure that interventions do not promote inequitable gender roles relations, WOCCA’s Gender Policy presents the results of the review of experiences and the consultation process among WOCCA and project beneficiaries, outlines a combination of positive measures for women and gender mainstreaming measures.
- During the on going WOCCA’s structural programme April, 2008-March 2009, WOCCA and Project Beneficiaries have together exercised and implemented the community Cost Sharing Policy which intended to stop free handouts and WOCCA has built the local capacities & structures of the project village committees/beneficiaries to promote contributions (Cash/in-Kind) for cost sharing of the project to ensure programme sustainability.
- WOCCA financial staff has been trained on GAAP to improve their financial capacity performance and skills in 2007.
- From October 2007-January 2008, WOCCA staff have been provided the Emergency Preparedness and Response Action (EPARA) training by Resource Person attached to WOCCA by Oxfam Novib Nairobi Office to enable WOCCA to respond according to International Standards to wide range of emergencies.
- WOCCA is currently working with UNDP in Employment Generation Early Recovery (EGER) project. It has created temporary jobs for more than 419 poor farmers and IDPs in ten villages in Jowhar, Mahaday and Bal’ad
- 2009-11 Agriculture and livelihood programme targeting 10 villages in Shabelle revirine area is currenlty implemented by WOCCA and funded by our lead partner Oxfam Novib
- Having experienced the success of its past projects, WOCCA intends to switch to engaging in women empowerment (through agriculture) and food security in future projects. WOCCA feels very strongly that women are the most vulnerable and on many occasions, women are left widowed or attending to the household and childcare duties alone with very little support from their male spouses.
